Time To Declutter?

By Donna Tashjian

“STUFF”, WE ALL HAVE IT.

I remember when we moved to Grand Rapids we told the moving company what size of house we had and they gave us their biggest truck, and it still wasn’t big enough to fit all of our stuff. If you have moved you understand the statement, “How did we get this much stuff?!” Storage units became popular around 1960 to begin to handle the overflow of our stuff. I did some searching and found an article, Self-storage: How warehouses for personal junk became a $38 billion industry. “It says one in eleven American’s pay for a storage unit to put their stuff.” That’s a lot of money for a simple locked space to put our stuff.

Studies have shown that clutter affects our mental & physical health. This article, “What clutter does to your brain and body” states, “In 2011, neuroscience researchers using fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) and other physiological measurements found clearing clutter from the home and work environment resulted in a better ability to focus and process information, as well as increased productivity. Clutter can make us feel stressed, anxious, and depressed. These feelings can cause us to choose non-beneficial behavior like snacking, etc to handle the stress.”

But today I want to talk about a different kind of clutter we collect. I am talking about emotional clutter. The kind of clutter our brain stores in neat little storage units with labels on them. All the times we were hurt, disappointed, let down and the list goes on.

Even more than clearing clutter from our physical environment, processing our emotional clutter or baggage can revolutionize our lives. My son when he was little had a hard time picking up his toys. We had one toy box and it seemed whatever he wanted to play with that day was always at the bottom so, he would dump the entire toy box on the floor of his small bedroom. When it came time to clean up he was totally overwhelmed about where to start. I ask him to just pick up the blocks, then pick up the cars, etc. When we broke it down into manageable steps he could handle the task of cleaning up.

I love helping people turn their baggage into luggage to live the life they always dreamed of. It is possible even if you tried other things before all the while keeping your journey private. The main source for help was getting the right support. I would love to support you in your journey. it is so worth it!
